Having worked with and fitted both Aluminium and UPVc windows for a number of years we will try and answer the ongoing debate, Aluminium windows vs UPVc Windows - what is the better material for your window project. Although this is not as straight forward as you may think but we shall give the advantages of each window system to help assist you with your buying decision.
There aren’t many disadvantages of Aluminium or UPVc window replacements – all new windows need to comply with building regulations which require new windows to be of a high standard, offering excellent energy efficiency - a huge benefit and energy cost saving compared with older windows.
Aluminium vs UPVc windows – Energy efficiency
Like we mentioned before, both options are preferrable over an older window, but which gives the ultimate in energy efficiency? UPVc are renowned for being a great insulator with their multi chamber construction to keep warm air trapped within your home. Whereas aluminium, by nature, is a colder material to touch. But aluminium windows have come along way and are now constructed with a thermal break within the frame. This barrier prevents aluminium-to-aluminium contact from the inside to the outside of your window, to stop the transfer of cold air coming inside – keeping the inside of your home warmer for longer.
Whether you choose aluminium or UPVc, all our windows come with a-rated double glazing to help keep the warmth, where it should be, within your home.
Aluminium vs UPVc windows – Cost comparison
One of the main benefits of choosing UPVc windows to aluminium is the price. On a like for like basis aluminium windows are more expensive because of the higher material and manufacturing costs. But, in the long term, aluminium can prove to be very cost effective because it’s a more robust material than UPVc with a longer lifespan.
For more affordable initial outlay, UPVc offer a superb ‘fit and forget’ window solution because they’re highly resistant to rot, low maintenance only needing a wipe with a cloth every now and then to keep them looking their best.
Aluminium vs UPVc windows – Aesthetics and colour choices
Whilst your budget may dictate whether you opt for aluminium or UPVc, so will your style of property. Some older style properties may require a traditional window style (such as UPVC sliding sash windows) compared to a more modern home, which may look amazing with slim aluminium frames. Both aluminium and UPVc windows offer a wide range of colours, but with aluminium you can get to ‘choose the rainbow’ as aluminium can be powder coated to any RAL colour! But with UPVc you can choose wood effect finishes, which isn’t possible with aluminium. Just depends on your preference and vision for your home.
Aluminium vs UPVc windows – Durability
Both aluminium and UPVc are weather resistant and durable, but aluminium windows do have a longer life span at around 35-45 years, compared to UPVc windows at around 25 years.
Aluminium vs UPVc windows – Security
When it comes to the security levels there is little difference between UPVc and aluminium windows. Both feature reinforced frames and multi-point locking systems. There is also an additional security measure you can have with both types of windows called Secured By Design seal of approval. This is a British manufacturing status accredited by the Police and Home Office which has been vigorously tested to ensure the best security for your home.
Aluminium vs UPVc windows – Conclusion
As outlined in detail above, the aluminium windows vs UPVC windows debate is far more complex than saying one is better than the other.
